BRIEF: System maintenance causes massive BlackBerry e-mail outage [The News & Observer, Raleigh, N.C.]

(News & Observer (Raleigh, NC) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jan. 29--According to multiple reports, BlackBerry users on all U.S. cell phone networks were experiencing e-mail outages this morning.

A post on the company's official Twitter account just after noon said e-mail service was coming back online.

"BIS email delivery was delayed this morning in NA [North America] due to system maintenance," BlackBerry said. "Service is now being restored. We apologize for inconvenience." The maker of the iconic BlackBerry mobile phone, Research In Motion, earlier this month selected the Triangle as the site of its newest office.

Based in Ontario, Canada, the 25-year-old RIM has U.S. offices in Texas, California, Florida and Illinois.

RIM is expanding to keep up with tremendous growth over the past year. Sales jumped 41 percent, and BlackBerry subscriber accounts surged 70 percent. In the third quarter alone the company shipped more than 10 million BlackBerry devices.

The company's rapid growth has strained its communications networks, leading to blackouts and crashes every year for the past three years. Last month, BlackBerry users clogged complaint lines after their phones were disabled for several hours at a time.
