BRIEF: Police identify East St. Louis couple killed in Thanksgiving murder-suicide

Nov 23, 2012 (St. Louis Post-Dispatch - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- EAST ST. LOUIS -- Illinois State Police were investigating an apparent murder-suicide Thursday night in the 700 block of North 75th Street.

Authorities identified the dead as Dorothy C. McCaskill, 66, and her estranged husband, Bobby G. Stewart, 69.

They were at their daughter's home about 6 p.m. when Stewart came downstairs and fatally shot McCaskill with a handgun, according to Capt. Jim Morrisey, a State Police spokesman. Stewart then fired at his daughter, 44, as she ran from the home to a neighbor's house. She was hit several times in the leg.

When police arrived, they found McCaskill in the front room of the home and took her outside the house, where she was pronounced dead. She had been shot multiple times, Morrisey said.

Police used a robot to search the upper level of the home. They found Stewart dead in a bedroom of an apparent self-inflicted shotgun wound.

Authorities found two guns in the home.

The daughter was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
