Wireless and Mobile Solutions Leader Smith Micro Software Celebrates 30 Years of Innovation
ALISO VIEJO, Calif. --(Business Wire)--
Developer of wireless, enterprise and consumer software applications, Smith
Micro Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:
SMSI) is celebrating its thirtieth year in business.
William
W. Smith, Jr., President and CEO, started Smith Micro (News - Alert) with the goal
of making a living doing something fun. Under his leadership, the
company has evolved from dial-up modem and fax software to a publicly
traded, global technology provider creating the latest in mobile and
wireless innovations. November 30, 2012 marked three decades in
achievement.
In the mid-80s, Smith Micro had five employees working in a small,
two-room office in Huntington Beach, California. Today, its global
network of employees and customers spans four continents, with
headquarters in Aliso Viejo, California. From the company's first
product, Stock Portfolio System, to today's mobility solutions aimed at
wireless network operators, device manufacturers, enterprises and
government agencies, Smith Micro has been able to innovate and adapt
through multiple waves of technology evolution.
"Smith Micro has had a tremendous impact on Aliso Viejo, with hundreds
of jobs created, numerous charitable initiatives and a strong corporate
community they've helped establish locally," said Bill
Phillips, mayor pro tem, Aliso Viejo. "We greatly appreciate Bill
Smith's faith in the city - even when it was nothing but a lot of empty,
rolling hills - as it truly helped put us on the map as a Southern
California technology hub."
"Working at the forefront of the wireless revolution, and helping
businesses and individuals to improve communication and collaboration
has been a true joy," said Smith. "I'm incredibly proud of our
passionate employees who bring creativity, dedication and unmatched
technical expertise to deliver products that are used on millions of
mobile devices around the world."
Smith Micro was an early innovator in wireless connectivity software. As
fax modems became pervasive, so did the company's products among modem
vendors such as IBM, AT&T, Motorola (News - Alert), Hayes and US Robotics. In 1999, the
company transitioned from analog modem to the digital wireless device
market, and its QuickLink
products became the top selling connection managers for many of the
world's largest wireless network operators.
"Communications and networking products and services - and that includes
wireless and mobile in a big way - have literally grown up with Smith
Micro," said Craig Mathias of the advisory firm Farpoint
Group. "We began operations here in 1991 with QuickLink® software
and dial-up modems, and we continue to enjoy using the products of this
passionate, committed and innovative supplier of the tools that make
contemporary networking work. Congratulations to all on this remarkable
milestone!"
Smith Micro Software's (News - Alert) product portfolio now includes a wide range of
client and server applications that manage voice, data, video and
connectivity over mobile broadband networks. In addition, the company
has a consumer software business unit that produces a variety of
applications for PCs, Macs and tablet computers, including the
well-known Stuffit®
file compression software. Its graphics solutions, in particular, are
highly popular with professional digital artists and animators, and
distributed through a variety of retail channels around the world.
Since its inception, the company has achieved many milestones, including:
-
Shipped more than 100 million copies of its QuickLink
connection management software worldwide

solution by increasing Wi-Fi connections at a rate of 9,500 every
