BRIEF: Police determine bomb threat to be hoax at Weld courthouse

Dec 17, 2012 (Greeley Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Authorities found no signs of a bomb Monday after they searched the pickup of a 75-year-old man who claimed to have a device in the vehicle outside the Weld County Courthouse.

Sgt. Susan West, spokeswoman for Greeley police, said Warren D. Bell told a law enforcement officer Monday there was a bomb under the seat of his pickup just before he was scheduled to appear in court. Bell's pickup was parked near the north side of the court complex. Using a robot to search the vehicle, Greeley's Bomb Disposal Unit determined there was no sign of an explosive device.

West said Bell has been arrested on suspicion of falsely reporting an explosive, weapon or harmful substance, a felony.

Authorities blocked off an area around the north side of the court complex, 915 10th St., about 1 p.m. The area, including a stretch of 9th Street and part of Lincoln Park, was closed to traffic and pedestrians until just after 3 p.m. Buildings in the complex were locked down, and court proceedings were put on hold.

Bell was scheduled to appear at 1:30 p.m. in Weld County Court for a case in which he was accused of driving under the influence and other traffic-related violations.
