BRIEF: Oklahoma students, schools honored by state Education Department

Dec 20, 2012 (The Oklahoman - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- State schools Superintendent Janet Barresi on Wednesday honored several Oklahoma students and schools for academic achievements.

Coweta Public Schools has been named to the 2012 Advanced Placement Honor Roll. It's one of about 500 school districts nationwide, but it is the only Oklahoma school district to receive the honor, Barresi said. The district boosted the number of students who could earn college credit through AP tests by 25 percent. The number of students taking AP exams is increasing as well.

"It's quite remarkable," Barresi said.

Also, two Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics students were named 2012 Oklahoma Advanced Placement Scholars. Jimmy Wu is a senior, and Jessica Oehrlein is a recent graduate.

The robotics team from Norman Public Schools was recognized for its achievement in regional and international competitions. The school district team is comprised of students from both Norman and Norman North high schools.

The team is ranked No. 2 in the world.
