Grants given to local youth projects

Feb 11, 2013 (St. Cloud Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Bernick Family Foundation has awarded $221,000 in grants to several St. Cloud-area youth projects, including $25,000 to GREAT Theatre and $20,000 each to Catholic Charities for its Cultivating Youth program and Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Minnesota for its college readiness program.


The grant to GREAT will help pay for the organization's 2013-14 School Matinee Series.

The competitive Bernick's grants are made through the Central Minnesota Community Foundation.

Other grants included: -- $12,000 to ServeMinnesota for tutoring to 120 students in kindergarten through third grade at Madison, Talahi and Discovery schools in St. Cloud.

-- $11,500 to the Cardinal Athletic Foundation at Alexandria High School.

-- $9,000 to the Minnesota Children's Museum for an interactive early literacy learning program at Great River Regional Library in St. Cloud.

-- $7,500 to BestPrep for scholarships to the Minnesota Business Venture business and career development camp.

-- $5,000 to the Granite City Gearheads program at Apollo High School for kits to design and construct a robot and compete at the Robotics Competition.

-- $40,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northland in Duluth for its teen center.

-- The foundation also provided $51,000 in ongoing support to nonprofits such as Central Minnesota Council of Boy Scouts, CentraCare Health Foundation, St. Cloud Technical & Community College Foundation, United Way of Central Minnesota, Central Minnesota Community Foundation and College of St. Scholastica. It also awarded $20,000 in two- and four-year college scholarships.
